Training on the use of the Small-Scale Chemistry (SSC) Kit in chemistry practicums for high school chemistry teachers in Karangasem Regency was held on Wednesday, July, 2026. The training took place in the Chemistry Laboratory of State High School (SMA Negeri 1) Bebandem, Karangasem attended by 16 chemistry teachers of high schools and 5 students. The activity began with an opening ceremony, including the singing of the Indonesian national anthem, a prayer, a report from the head of the community service committee, Dr. Ni Made Wiratini, and remarks from the principal of SMA N 1 Bebandem State High School. Following the opening ceremony, the activity continued with an introduction to the SSC Kit and a practicum using the SSC Kit for micro-scale acid-base titration.
The high schools participating in this activity were: SMA Negeri 1 Bebandem, SMA Negeri 1 Selat, SMA Negeri 1 Amlapura, SMA Negeri 2 Amlapura, SMA Negeri 3 Amlapura, SMA Negeri 1 Abang, and SMA N 1 Rendang.
In his report, the head of the Social Service Committee conveyed that the purpose of the SSC Kit training in this chemistry practicum was to improve the professional competence of chemistry teachers, especially in chemistry and pedagogy. Training on the use of the SSC Kit in this practicum has multiple benefits, in addition to improving the professional competence of teachers, also carrying out practicums in accordance with the principles of green chemistry, or more environmentally friendly, and more effective and efficient practicums. The SSC Kit used in this training was then donated to SMA Negeri 1 Bebandem Karangasem to be used in chemistry practicum activities, considering that this school is a school that educates children from all over Karangasem and the laboratory facilities, both tools and materials, are very minimal. The implementation of this community service could be carried out thanks to financial support from Ganesha University of Education and the collaboration of LUPIC (Leading University Program for International Cooperation) with Sogang University, South Korea
The SSC Kit training activity was officially opened by the Principal of SMA N 1 Bebandem Komang Sudana Martayasa, S.Pd., M.Pd. The Principal of SMA N 1 Bebandem welcomed this training activity because it can improve the professionalism of high school chemistry teachers and will certainly have an impact on the process of implementing chemistry learning, especially learning chemistry practicums in the laboratory. The Principal of SMA N 1 Bebandem stated that in general and high schools in Karangasem face problems in implementing the practicum learning process in the laboratory, due to limited facilities, both tools and materials. This is certainly rooted in the very low budget for the procurement of practicum tools and materials. With this activity and the donation of the SSC Kit to SMA N 1 Bebandem, it certainly helps this school in providing better education, especially in the implementation of the practicum learning process in the laboratory. For that we welcome this activity, and express our gratitude for the implementation of this SSC Kit training.
After the opening, the activity continued with an introduction to the SSC Kit, specifically for acid-base titration. The activity continued with a micro-scale acid-base titration practicum using the SSC Kit. There were four experiments conducted in this training, including (1) titration of a strong base (NaOH) with a strong acid (HCl), (2) titration of a weak acid-base (NH4OH) with a strong acid (HCl), (3) titration of a strong base (NaOH) with a weak acid (CH3COOH), and (4) titration of a weak base (NH4OH) with a weak acid (CH3COOH). The concentration of the acid and base used was 0.1 M each with a volume of approximately 1.0 mL each. The teachers were divided into five groups of four people, and each group conducted a micro-scale acid-base titration. This micro-scale acid-base titration requires a very high level of accuracy and precision, in order to obtain good results. In this training, the teachers adapted to using an unusual tool, namely a small-scale “burette” titration tool. Figure 1 shows the teachers’ activities during training on the use of the SSC Kit in a micro-scale acid-base titration practicum. They appear to be engaged in the activity with sincerity, seriousness, diligence, and patience, yet cheerfully.
After the training on the use of the SSC Kit in the micro-scale acid-base titration practicum, the activity continued with the signing of the handover document. The handover document was signed by the Head of the Community Service Implementation, Dr. Ni Made Wiratini, S.Pd., M.Sc., and the Principal of SMA Negeri 1 Bebandem, I Komang Sudana Martayasa, S.Pd. M.Pd. On this occasion, six boxes of SSC Kits for chemistry practicum were handed over to SMA Negeri 1 Bebandem which were received by the Principal of SMA Negeri 1 Bebandem Karangasem. The Principal of SMA Negeri 1 Bebandem expressed his highest appreciation and gratitude for the donation of the SSC Kit, and this will be very beneficial for SMA Negeri 1 Bebandem Karangasem
The training activity on the use of the SSC Kit in micro-scale acid-base titration was officially closed by the Head of MGMP Kimia Karangasem regency. On that occasion, the Head of MGMP Kimia Karangasem expressed his gratitude to Ganesha University of Education, the Community Service Team, and the high school chemistry teachers who had attended and actively participated in this training, as well as all parties involved, with the hope that the knowledge and experience gained could be implemented in their respective schools.(fmipa)
